Asalamu Alaykom,
Haiku is a Japanese formal poem consisting of:
seven syllables in the first line
five syllables in the second line
seven syllables in the third line
That ordering is very Islamic and in keeping with the Muslim minds who were among the first to understand mathematics.
These lines are not actually sentences but rather a collection of deeply meaningful thoughts which create a kind of core essence of the subject matter. In 2008, when I was still teaching at a Muslim school in the U.S., I gave my children the assignment of writing a haiku describing one of the 99 Names of Allah.
Each name is an aspect to The Source of All. Just as I can be described as a Muslimah, an American, a teacher, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a resident of Egypt, a friend, a blogger, and so on. Actually, that is an activity onto itself. How many aspects do you have in you?
So, the children got to choose one name and it was a surprisingly difficult assignment. It really got us in touch with how deep these names were!
One of the criteria is that you couldn't use the name within the haiku. You had to have weighty words; meaning that each word had to be important and could stand alone. Also, if someone else in the class used a phrase, for example, "Allahu Akbar," within their poem, then no one else could. The poem had to stay focused on the aspect; be succinct and be worthy of the subject matter.
I did not have 99 students that year. Some names are still waiting for a haiku. Wouldn't it be cool to finish this project? Readers, if you would like to try your hand at creating one of these poems (for the names which don't already have a haiku) please enter it into the comment section. I would love to see what you come up with!
I like it dear very nice naat Sharif
