Crippled Muslim Men

Asalamu Alaykom,

Crippled Muslim Men

The man with the slow and unsteady gait
hurries on his way through streets
knowing the azan is coming.

Each shuffle with his half-limp body
moves him closer to the prayer hall,
believing it is his obligation to Allah.

I watch him from my window sill,
watch how he cannot keep a straight line,
yet he is following The Best Path.

Many a "Muslim" man stays at home,
rests his body all through Jummah
never admitting he's losing his stride.

Spiritual Starfish

Asalamu Alaykom,

I've been searching for---
no, not for---
I've been searching
with
a spiritual starfish

Among many exes
I was surprised to see
one exo
skeletal friend
supportive; protective;
mine.  For me.

It was injured in the move---
the moves of many---
and from my immobility.
Yet it survived and thrived
ready to grow another limb of
spirituality.

Together, he ---
or she---
(I'm not sure which and
I'm too shy to pry)
We two are going through
these seas to seize
what we might
be.

Just a woman with inabilty
and a spiritual starfish
growing bigger, stronger
each limb growing longer
even if by chance
I break

Together we regenerate

I See My Mother Every Morning

I see my mother every morning.

Yes, it's her face I see.

          I can't describe my surprise

for she's where she shouldn't be.

          I see her eyes and mouth;

          the lines around them too.

When I stare into the mirror,

she says, "It's not me.  It's YOU!"

99 Names of Allah in Haiku

These haikus were composed by students of mine at an Islamic school in America.  What I loved about doing this exercise is that the essence of the name had to be found so succinctly; only five syllables, then seven, and then five.  Somehow, with such a focused intent, a very true, deep meaning was achieved.

Ahmed Nur Ali

Sad news out of Minneapolis.

From Allah we come and to Allah do we return.

From the depths of civil war

to apartments in the sky

a boy turned into a man

and at twenty, he did die.

For what? A girl asked simply.

A newsman filmed her sigh.

Viewers watched and observed,

"Somalis sure did multiply."

They didn't see the bravery

he had to hope and to dream

to study hard and make good;

to maintain some self-esteem.

He wanted just to give back;

to mentor a younger one,

they were the last to see him

he was shot down with a gun.

Who could Ahmed have become?

God, why did it have to be?

A college freshman is gone

His family in misery.

Pray for Ahmed Nur Ali

who started today in prayer

his first day as a tutor

His sad death was most unfair.

9/23 Fear, Questions after Augsberg Student Ambushed
11/7 This would have been Ahmed Nur Ali's birthday. Though, in Islam, we don't celebrate birthdays (only the two eids), it is a time to remember young man who can never grow older.
I talk about him in my class every time some child pretends to play guns.

"Guns hurt people. We come here in peace, so no guns!"
Inshahallah, there doesn't have to be more bloodshed in the world among Somali youth.
