Eid Mubarak

Asalamu Alaykom,

I want to wish you a sincere, "Happy Eid," from me here in Egypt to wherever you are in the world.  We are connected.

Some of you feel alone and I want to reassure you that you are not. You can celebrate the fact that 1 billion others are grateful for the end of another Hajj.

May I see you at the Kabba...

and if not there then in Jennah inshallah.

Thanks, EgyptChick :)

Hey, me too for the sole celebrator! But how can we feel alone if we are BOTH alone ;)

Asalamu Alaykom Anon,

Good question!

Islam has two holidays to celebrate ONLY. There might be other days to observe but these are the two times to party.

Eid Al-Fitr was in August this year---you're right! It's considered the small Eid. It marks the end of a month long fast; Ramadan. It is a day you CANNOT fast. You must celebrate.

Eid Al-Adha is right now and is considered the big Eid. It marks the end of Hajj. This is whether or not you participated by going to Mecca. Everyone who has the means to slaughter an animal or to purchase meat to distribute to the poor is encouraged to do so. You don't need to give it all away. You just need to give some. It comemmorates the moment Prophet Ibrahim/Abraham )peace be upon him) thought he had to sacrifice his son. God never asked him to do this; it was only in a dream vision. So, Ibrahim (pbuh) thought he had to do this in obedience but was stopped and a sheep was slaughtered instead.

Lots of people outside of Islam look at the whole occassion as barbaric. I find this really hypocritical. These same people buy plastic wrapped meat many days old from faraway slaughterhouses they've never seen.

Muslims who slaughter for Eid in Egypt have been raising their sheep for months or years. They have been feeding it and taking care of it. To kill it is break a relationship.

I hope that answered some of what you're wondering. Of course you can look up more info :)
